New cooker / crock pot?

Hello. I have this 3-quart Rival Crock oval someone gave me, but it seems to cook how much too fast. (My poor more Roast burnt after 3:00.) Even my mother told me the same thing when she used. (And no, we do not have on a high setting.) Can you recommend a slow cooker better or at least some advice on why my stuff is burned? Winter is coming and I have a penchant for chili and chowder. Thank you! Yes, I know you're supposed to add water.

Westbend-catalog number 84626. It is quite reliable. I put it on setting # 2 and when I come home after 9:00, dinner is ready and Never burn. It includes a bottom grid to keep food off the pot and helps administer the meat juices and vegetables.
