Why does the recipe say "brown the beef and sausage" before I put it in the slow cooker for 7-9 hours?

I Mock Lasagna according the recipe and it says I should brown the meat first. That kind of defeats the purpose of using the slow cooker, I do not want to spend that extra time preparation and cleaning. Can I get away with not browning it first??

browning adds flavor and ensures that the meat is cooked a safe level. slow cooker cooks at low temperature, which may not necessarily kill the nastyness you can find in undercooked meat. I prefer to take the time to brown the meat and make a little more cleaning than going to the hospital.
